Buenos Aires, January 19 (NA)—Former forward Bernardo Romeo explained the reasons that led him to leave his position as coordinator of the Argentina Football Association's youth teams, a role he had held since 2020 and which he left in December.
A month after his departure, the 48-year-old former coordinator, as reported by the Argentine news agency through DSports Radio, explained that his decision was linked to a new professional opportunity abroad.
«A possibility arose from outside, a new challenge. In this role, the most important thing is that Scaloni looks down and that there are young players in the senior team,» he assessed.
Finally, Romeo acknowledged that he was left with a «bitter taste» from the lost Under-20 World Cup final against Morocco, backed the work of Diego Placente, and also pointed to the context of Argentine football, where young players emigrate quickly: «There is a rush to finish a process… for me, you can't skip stages».
«The United States is growing a lot in football,» said the 2001 world youth champion.
Beyond his departure, the Tandil native emphasized that AFA's focus remains on development and projection to the senior team, and he defended the continuity of the training plan: «The most important thing is that the boys appear in the senior team. It was difficult to make the decision, but I felt it was the ideal moment to step aside,» he expressed about the project he will take on in the United States, at Port St. Lucie club.
Romeo detailed that his new role will be as a sporting director and that he will have work ahead of him in a growing structure: «Today it is not competing, I have work to do. I love new challenges, it excites me».
